Government through UDC has acquired 32% shares in Horyal Investments Holding Ltd- the operators of Atiak Sugar Factory located in Amuru District. The investment involves the establishment of a Greenfield Sugar factory with a crushing capacity of 1,650 tonnes per day and a sugar cane plantation of approximately 28500 acres and production of 6MW of electricity.
Construction works are ongoing with expected completion date of May 2019. The investment is already working with two Cooperative societies and about 9000 households.
Above the Hon. Amelia Kyambadde, Minister of Trade, Industry and Cooperatives on a guided tour of the factory construction site. The Minister is accompanied by Hon Members of Parliament from the region, Board and Management of UDC and the Investment promoter , Ms Amina Hersi Moghe.
On completion, the investment will:
i) Boost economic activity in Northern Uganda and foster social economic development
ii) Improve the livelihood of the people of Atiak especially the women and out growers.
iii) Attract and encourage further social infrastructure development in the area.
iv) Create employment opportunities through recruitment of technical and non-technical personnel. 1,500 people will directly be employed and 5,000 will be indirectly employed.
